So the University of North Carolina has been part of a coup. Apparently, over the last 20 years 3,000 students , many student athletes, benefited from grade boosts. The student athletes were enrolled in "paper classes", or fake classes but on paper are real, and received credit for them. These paper classes were included in over 188 courses. The biggest reason for these classes was to keep the athletes eligible to play. Many other students were in the classes were unaware of the fact that they were fake, and there diplomas could be under review.
This really irks my that UNC would do this. It's not fair for the students who actually completed the class, but they could lose their diplomas. It's ridiculous that UNC would give "special treatment" to their athletes and don't require them to actually earn their credits. I think that if UNC did this, there is a big chance that other universities and colleges do it too.
Frick man! I just barely heard about this! That's crazy! I wonder how it'll affect the school and they're requests for admission, their standing etc etc. That's messed up but I kinda got a chuckle for it.
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling a few professors may be under review . . . Their names would have to go on these "paper classes" for them to be available to students. There could be a number of professors who find them selves looking for a new job next semester.
DeleteI love watching college sports and I think it is cool when an athlete can play a sport while going through school. If the student athletes are cheating their way through school then that is not right. It isn't fair to the students who completed the class. The NCAA needs to crack down on things like this so that it doesn't keep happening in the future.

I'm also very bugged that student athletes pretty much always get full ride scholarships and can fake there way through college. And people who pay for and work hard throughout college are hurt because of the lies of their university.
ReplyDeleteIf student athletes are taking these "paper classes", the do you think student musicians or other organizations could be doing this? how would you go about trying to find all these different "paper classes"?
DeleteSo....what happens when my doctor was in half of these "paper classes"? While it does say it is mostly the athletes who are taking advantage of them, who is to say others aren't? They're out in the work force using their "diploma" (which they did NOT earn) possibly harming society.
ReplyDeleteI did some more research into it, and it said some of the students didn't know of the fake classes they were taking, but there was also some who sought the class out. I guess reviewing them could be a solution but there would be innocent people who thought they completed the course honestly. So the problem would be sorting the guilty and not guilty.
DeleteAny idea what the courses even entailed? It kind of sounds like something these athletes didn't even have to show up to, but at the same time almost a legit class because others were doing work for it.
DeleteYeah I kind of find it hard to believe that the students didn't know that the classes were fake. They didn't even have to show up yet they got an A.

This really sucks for the students. Most of the student athletes are not going to become pros. When they are seeking a job employers might not give it to them because of this scandal and for good reason. However, the students who didn't know about the paper classes will get screwed over for something they didn't do knowingly. They might have to go and get their diploma for real. Another thing that bothers me is when the NCAA hands down its ruling it is going to hurt the athletes coming in. Its like the Reggie Bush thing at USC, (no matter how much I dislike the Trojans) the students after Reggie Bush got punished for something they didn't do. I get that you have to punish the school, but this just bugs me. Well anyway enough ranting, off to the next comment.
ReplyDeleteThis is very irritating. And, somehow, I find it difficult to believe that ALL of those athletes were unaware of the "paper classes" on their transcripts. Someone else said this already, but I find it admirable when a busy college athlete can keep up his/her grades, too, so if I find out that it's all a lie, the respect I once had is gone.
